HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, and the trades

Marketing for the trades, built on urgency.

I spent five years running marketing for multi-million dollar home services companies. It is the most competitive local advertising arena there is, and it taught me something that applies to every business I work with now: when the customer has a problem right now, whoever is easiest to find and fastest to answer wins.

The Buyer

How people actually hire a contractor.

Most home services buying decisions are compressed. A water heater fails, an AC unit quits in August, a storm takes shingles off. The homeowner grabs a phone, searches, and calls one of the first two or three names they see. There is very little deliberation and almost no brand loyalty in that moment.

That compression changes what matters. Position beats persuasion. A ten percent better website is worth less than being one slot higher in the map pack, because most of these buyers never scroll far enough to compare. And speed to answer matters as much as either: an unanswered call at 7pm is a job that went to the next name on the list.

The exception is planned work. Roof replacements, remodels, system upgrades. Those buyers do compare, do read reviews carefully, and do visit your website properly. Which means most trades businesses need to win two very different searches at once.

The Playbook

The playbook for the trades.

Same principles, applied to how your buyers actually behave.

01

Start here if you're eligible

Local Services Ads sit above everything with a Google Guaranteed badge, and you pay per lead rather than per click. For home services this is often the single highest-intent channel available, because the badge clears the trust hurdle instantly for someone about to let a stranger into their house.

02

Own the map pack

The map is where emergency searches end. Profile completeness, category accuracy, service areas, and a steady flow of recent reviews decide who gets shown. This is the asset that keeps producing after you stop paying for ads.

03

Capture the searches you can't rank for yet

Paid search covers the gap while local SEO compounds, and it lets you turn volume up in a slow week or down when the schedule is full. Seasonal trades especially benefit from a tap they can control.

04

Make the call effortless

Emergency traffic is impatient and almost entirely mobile. A visible phone number, fast load, and clear service pages are worth more than any amount of design polish.

Win the planned work

Before-and-afters and finished jobs do the persuading for the considered purchases. This is where the roof replacement buyer decides you're the credible option.

Worth Knowing

Where trades businesses usually leak.

Two places, consistently. Calls that go unanswered or straight to voicemail during working hours, which quietly wastes every dollar spent upstream. And reviews that stall, because the crew finishes the job and nobody ever asks. Both are cheap to fix and both cost more than any campaign setting.

Questions

Home Services, answered.

Do you only work with home services companies?

No. I spent five years in the trades and those instincts transfer, but this practice serves law firms, medical and dental practices, local shops, and other small and mid-sized businesses fighting for the same searches their competitors are.

Should a contractor run Local Services Ads or regular PPC?

Often both. Local Services Ads bring pay-per-lead volume with the Google Guaranteed badge, and PPC covers searches and services LSAs don't reach. If budget is tight, eligible contractors usually start with LSAs.

How important are reviews for a trades business?

They are close to decisive. Reviews drive your map pack position, your Local Services Ads position, and the click itself. A business with recent, plentiful reviews beats a better contractor with stale ones almost every time.

What about seasonal swings?

Paid channels are the lever. You can scale spend up ahead of your busy season and pull back when the schedule fills, while local SEO holds your baseline position year-round.
